I suppose my craftiness has it's ups and downs as with everything else. Lately I've been making googly-eyes at some new fabric but I've been reluctant to buy since I'm already hoarding quite a bit of fabric already. So instead I'm trying to come up with some small projects to use up some the existing fabric...to make room for bigger, better fabrics :)<br />
<br />
Anyway, I've been toying with the idea of making a pot holder for a while now, mostly because I don't have one already and I really dislike using the whole oven glove thing...seems like overkill to me...then again I'm sure I won't be thinking that the next time I burn my hand trying to get something out of the oven. But until then...I made this little heart-shaped pot holder out of some leftover fabric and batting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6lokECqpJWE/UbZPzdimJQI/AAAAAAAAAFg/99iRz0LSxCk/s1600/DIY+Heart+Pot+Holder+2a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6lokECqpJWE/UbZPzdimJQI/AAAAAAAAAFg/99iRz0LSxCk/s320/DIY+Heart+Pot+Holder+2a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Materials:<br />
-fabric (1-3 different types)<br />
-batting (heat resistant recommended)<br />
<br />
Start by making a heart-shape pattern for your oven mitt. You will need to cut 2 hearts out of your batting and 4 out of your fabric (1 front, 1 back, 2 for the 'pockets').<br />
<br />
Cut the 2 hearts that will form the pockets in half (sad I know). With the right sides together, sew along the edge that you just cut. Flip right side out and press. You can add batting to these pieces if you want some extra projection, I didn't use any and I think mine work just fine and it reduces the bulk a little bit.<br />
<br />
Next baste a piece of batting to the heart shape that will form the 'back' of the mitt, or the part that will be covered up by the pockets. You can also baste the batting to the 'front' of the mitt, the part that will be touching whatever you're picking up, but I decided to get fancy and do some quilted hearts. Be sure to follow the directions if you are using heat resistant batting.<br />
<br />
Next position the 2 pocket pieces on top of the back of the mitt. I was originally planning on lining them up exactly but I decided to leave a small space to make it easier to use. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jYEDWuxqXtE/UbZPwqTldMI/AAAAAAAAAFY/_RiMzYnGXvI/s1600/DIY+Heart+Pot+Holder+1a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jYEDWuxqXtE/UbZPwqTldMI/AAAAAAAAAFY/_RiMzYnGXvI/s400/DIY+Heart+Pot+Holder+1a.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Now you should have completed the front and back pieces of your oven mitt. With the right sides together, sew all around the edge leaving a small opening on the side. Flip right side out and press. Then slip stitch the opening close. You can also add some top stitching if your mitt isn't too bulky. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cXCebOsU7rw/UbZP2SVb7pI/AAAAAAAAAFo/i-rlBKe7r8s/s1600/DIY+Heart+Pot+Holder+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cXCebOsU7rw/UbZP2SVb7pI/AAAAAAAAAFo/i-rlBKe7r8s/s320/DIY+Heart+Pot+Holder+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And that's it! I've been using mine for a couple weeks now and it's been working out pretty good. The only thing I dislike about it is the fact that the heat resistant batting always has a crinkling sound when I use it. <br />
<br />
I made the heart lobes a bit too long on my mitt so my fingers don't quite reach all the way to the end. Which can be a bit annoying if you're trying to do anything that requires any sort of finger dexterity. Also I would make the spacing a bit bigger between the pockets at the top of the heart. It just makes it a little easier to use. Sorry I don't have a picture to show the scale but it's about the size of my hand. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6lokECqpJWE/UbZPzdimJQI/AAAAAAAAAFg/99iRz0LSxCk/s1600/DIY+Heart+Pot+Holder+2a.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6lokECqpJWE/UbZPzdimJQI/AAAAAAAAAFg/99iRz0LSxCk/s320/DIY+Heart+Pot+Holder+2a.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<script data-pin-hover="true" src="//assets.pinterest.com/js/pinit.js" type="text/javascript"></script>Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8279313680706721337.post-8652041422740505902012-12-31T10:00:00.000-10:002012-12-31T10:00:52.859-10:00I'm still alive...Okay, sorry for the incredibly long absence but I'm not dead I swear! A huge thanks for everyone that responded to my last post about issues with my domicile, unfortunately it's incredibly difficult to find a cheap bunny-friendly place to live in Honolulu so I'm still living there. Other horror stories have since transpired but it's a roof over my head...<br />
<br />
But the real reason I've been gone for so long is...I got a new job! The commute is slightly longer and I actually work full time so I've been a lot busier ergo less time for craftiness. Which makes me sad cause I've seen sooo many cute projects lately that I can only fawn over on Pinterest while at the bus stop. I also am in an office as opposed to on my feet all day so now I feel like I need to make more time for exercise...not that it actually happens... <br />
<br />
Anyway, hopefully I can make more time to post tutorials and such in the coming year now that I'm mostly settled with my new job. I just bought a crochet hook last week and I have lots of old t-shirts for t-shirt yarn so perhaps some crochet baskets? I've never crocheted before but I've been madly in love with the giant knit and doily rugs that have been floating around. They've been around for a while I know but it's just a testament to how much I love them since I'm still obsessed with them. For example, check out this Rope Rug from <a href="http://whollykao.com/2012/06/22/diy-rope-rug/">Wholly Kao</a>:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jEh_O0PO7p4/UOHspXqtsmI/AAAAAAAAAE0/yXYdi8_T_AI/s1600/012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jEh_O0PO7p4/UOHspXqtsmI/AAAAAAAAAE0/yXYdi8_T_AI/s400/012.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Probably not the most practical rug but magnificent nonetheless, no? I love how thick the rope is that was used, unfortunately its about $40 a box from Joann's the tutorial calls for 3 so...$100+ for something that would probably be torn to shreds by my bun? Not so much... <br />
<br />
And just in case you need something to cheer you up on this fine New Year's Eve:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_-t8Gm6HQc/UOHothlmACI/AAAAAAAAAEk/bdGhSLtMIO4/s1600/nobility.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Z_-t8Gm6HQc/UOHothlmACI/AAAAAAAAAEk/bdGhSLtMIO4/s400/nobility.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
That's right...Title of Nobility is an option. <br />
<br />
<br />
So does anyone have any hot plans for New Year's? New Year's resolutions? Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8279313680706721337.post-46105329494383249782012-08-26T14:47:00.000-10:002012-08-26T14:47:53.973-10:00MIASorry I have been missing for this past week but I may be missing for a while longer. I am now in the process of finding a new place to live, somewhat unexpectedly unfortunately. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My apartment is on the top floor of a complex with businesses on the ground floor and last month a new 'arcade' opened up. Of course, when I say 'arcade' it doesn't sound too bad. For me it's kinda like okay, now my boyfriend is just going to be downstairs spending quarters playing DDR or some shooting game. But it's more of an adult arcade. And by that I mean it's how people get around the fact that gambling is illegal in Hawaii. So you can play games, and instead of winning money you win prizes which you can then trade in for money. For example, you could win a $10 phone card which you can then trade in for $10 cash. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So now there's a bunch of weird creepy guys hanging around the bottom floor who smoke/drink/eat/whatever else, and of course since they stay and smoke right at the entrance (which is illegal) all the smoke blows directly up into our apartment. And now there are a bunch of kids who smoke and deal marijuana downstairs too. And apparently my boyfriend has even seen a 'lady of the evening' down there haggling on prices...so yeah. Apparently the neighborhood is really going downhill. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What's really awesome is my boyfriend called the police last night because our neighbor was smoking so much marijuana that our entire apartment was filled with smoke (we don't have AC so if we close all the windows it becomes unbearably hot and stuffy). So the police officer asked him if he was burning, he said yeah just a small joint, and the officer was like 'okay' and let him go. No warning, nothing. Just let him get in a car and leave. So not only possession of an illegal substance but driving under the influence? Really?? Yeah that happened. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So we are now looking for a new place to live. Which is sad because our apartment has a really great location but with all the changes that happened in the past month we think it's time to find a new home. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So I apologize if I don't have too much to post for the next few weeks. I do have one tutorial in the works but after that it may be a while. </div>
<div>

So I kinda just made my own. <br />
<br />
Okay, prepare yourselves, this tutorial is quite lengthy compared to what I've been posting! But the process is really pretty simple and it comes together really quickly. I can't really remember what measurements I used but I will include my estimates. <br />
<br />
Supplies:<br />
-main fabric<br />
-lining<br />
-interfacing<br />
-velcro, or any type of closure<br />
<br />
Start by cutting the circles, you will need 1 piece of interfacing and 2 pieces of lining. The radius of the circle determines the height of your clutch. Cut all the circles in half. The radius of my circles were about 5.5 inches. <br />
<br />
To make the divider, cut a rectangle that has the same length as the diameter of your circles (plus seam allowances). The width is up to you. You will need 2 lining and 1 interfacing. Mine is about 10 inches by 7 inches. <br />
<br />
For the outside, start with the rectangle that is the same size as the divider. Then add a couple inches in length for the flap. This is the real reason why I can't remember my measurements, I was making this out of an old pair of shorts so I was trying to see how big I could make it out of one short leg. You will need 1 interfacing, 1 lining, and 1 main fabric. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH_OadS8yTQQpxVwE_keeNOGpgzsrYKHY6ONKIzl_-ZvV_gTpPdz7RvK6l-YesLQg5bS0ynQDe1mLZxTe28qbKHApPT8tpvFYgyjZszUTD43q3OWPzDieI93cmDNKSfIxaGU9DSJoQENpV/s1600/pouch+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH_OadS8yTQQpxVwE_keeNOGpgzsrYKHY6ONKIzl_-ZvV_gTpPdz7RvK6l-YesLQg5bS0ynQDe1mLZxTe28qbKHApPT8tpvFYgyjZszUTD43q3OWPzDieI93cmDNKSfIxaGU9DSJoQENpV/s320/pouch+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So fuse, sew or otherwise attach your interfacing. To make the divider, sew along all the edges, right sides together, and leave a small opening. Clip the corners, flip right side out and press. I added some top stitching along all the edges just because. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3eFzZC9g3SW1yM4S72jeaqIdKoUHIec8oLS6UwZv4zPgeb4B3DzSb0P66BG9Rz0S2fcmhuxBJW81JQyn5qCV4q4cx1-_qCarc5aT6Tq8otVvAn7aq8Ovyfpw9OOZte6JBjIkLMVAVBBvf/s1600/pouch+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3eFzZC9g3SW1yM4S72jeaqIdKoUHIec8oLS6UwZv4zPgeb4B3DzSb0P66BG9Rz0S2fcmhuxBJW81JQyn5qCV4q4cx1-_qCarc5aT6Tq8otVvAn7aq8Ovyfpw9OOZte6JBjIkLMVAVBBvf/s320/pouch+2.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
To make the little clamshell thingies, sew all along the curved edge with the right sides together. Notch the curved edge, flip right side out and press. I also top stitched along the curved edge. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOmaHooCmZVWDggwJZLOJRCtFe9p0SUMmUnK1jBU4jKijfdSkT1s6rbSPKehXQAR6ivBPSLmIx7aNWPyW3HokyAFagIRoO3fhRIVU7kpxnEWvmIgTqWh1rB5YOCsUCHvtKMle-niDj-iW4/s1600/pouch+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjOmaHooCmZVWDggwJZLOJRCtFe9p0SUMmUnK1jBU4jKijfdSkT1s6rbSPKehXQAR6ivBPSLmIx7aNWPyW3HokyAFagIRoO3fhRIVU7kpxnEWvmIgTqWh1rB5YOCsUCHvtKMle-niDj-iW4/s320/pouch+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The dots are where you will attach the divider later. The lines are where I sewed along the creases, this is optional but I think it makes it look a bit neater. Make sure that all the seams are on the inside. So start by folding the half circle in half, right sides in. Sew along the folded edge (where the arrow is) as close to the edge as you can while still catching all the layers of fabric. To determine the next point, fold it into third, leave a little overhang for the seam allowance. The fold on the left is where you will attach the divider later, and the fold on the right (where the arrow points) is where you will sew next. Repeat on the opposite side. Again, the bumpy side with the seams is the inside, and the smooth side is the outside. Repeat on the other clam shell. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PFQ7MAMdOSY/UChz7KKFHwI/AAAAAAAABdQ/MOzwmm_DibI/s1600/pouch+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PFQ7MAMdOSY/UChz7KKFHwI/AAAAAAAABdQ/MOzwmm_DibI/s1600/pouch+4.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Next, take the 2 main pieces, right sides together. You will want to place the semicircles on the inside, outside facing the main fabric. Sew all the way around leaving a small opening, flip right side out and press. You can either slip stitch it closed or top stitch all around. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZNiBZwvbksc/UChz72-RfmI/AAAAAAAABdY/hEdYxdJ4mQc/s1600/pouch+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZNiBZwvbksc/UChz72-RfmI/AAAAAAAABdY/hEdYxdJ4mQc/s320/pouch+5.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Add your velcro. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVKJ5iyVqeokkrQuON2tz5MgzCIGJI1_cRB-khhAlYSXhpGOFKmBv_ioQvqLVcOIRU2jZPxci1GJg5IdBb9CJh0u3jE3P2rUNFXJEZxIXifV9ndpaSzjTd-yboo4WHdZ2jHrMr6LAqdphz/s1600/pouch+6jpg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVKJ5iyVqeokkrQuON2tz5MgzCIGJI1_cRB-khhAlYSXhpGOFKmBv_ioQvqLVcOIRU2jZPxci1GJg5IdBb9CJh0u3jE3P2rUNFXJEZxIXifV9ndpaSzjTd-yboo4WHdZ2jHrMr6LAqdphz/s320/pouch+6jpg.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
When I went to add my divider I realized it was actually way too long so I added some seams to the middle giving it more of a flat bottom. Then you can either hand stitch the divider in place, like the pin shows, or you can use your machine. I used my machine to stitch about 1/2 inch just along the top. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivQEnjH-70Xzktbp-GQFhV8WB3S4Cp4j9wNv43RiqFi1fn7nWeUqQHcTV4iA0eW9IXcWlkqr0JbEAHH62dp-0fFhG-mHhkOGaAiZ5pOS19bXymVL_neVuR4U59j4_fcQiiLfIx3q21ttaK/s1600/pouch+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivQEnjH-70Xzktbp-GQFhV8WB3S4Cp4j9wNv43RiqFi1fn7nWeUqQHcTV4iA0eW9IXcWlkqr0JbEAHH62dp-0fFhG-mHhkOGaAiZ5pOS19bXymVL_neVuR4U59j4_fcQiiLfIx3q21ttaK/s320/pouch+7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And you're done! For some reason, I was thinking that this was going to be really complicated but was actually pretty simple. It just looks complicated because of the interior. <br />

Okay, so earlier this week we established that I am basically obsessed with shrinky dinks right? Well I just really can't help myself, I've been using them again! </div>

Does anyone else see a dragon in this one or is it just me??</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First, check out this <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_RWD-xtuBk&noredirect=1">video tutorial</a> on how to marble glass with nail polish. I saw something similar a while back on Pinterest but I couldn't get a good handle on how it actually worked. The video makes it seem really easy but it shows the general process. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hOQg2Jo9J2Y/UChuOtinNII/AAAAAAAABbU/kkmZzP8AWEU/s1600/marbled+pendants+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hOQg2Jo9J2Y/UChuOtinNII/AAAAAAAABbU/kkmZzP8AWEU/s320/marbled+pendants+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't actually take any photos during because you have to move really fast to get them to turn out...I mean <i>really</i> fast...no dilly dallying allowed here. </div>

<br />
There is a lot of trial and error involved in this, or at least for me. The video makes it look really simple but it took me about a million tries to actually get one to turn out well.<br />
<br />
I used an old jar lid with water to make mine. You really don't need much water maybe 1/2", just enough to keep the nail polish suspended and keep it from touching the container bottom.<br />
<br />
The video says to use a few drops of clear nail polish first which honestly did not work well for me. I think the problem was that my clear polish is supposed to dry in 60 seconds, so it formed this kind of dry film almost instantly when it hit the water. And when the polish is dry it causes problems...I ended up just using a drop of the blue polish first, which spread out completely and then did alternating drops from there.<br />
<br />
You will have to play around with your polish a bit because each polish has a different consistency and will spread differently. For example, the blue polish spread really quickly but the silver was thicker and slower moving.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XzuF1EzCzcE/UChuQYBbIVI/AAAAAAAABbk/bfnuApyo4q4/s1600/marbled+pendants+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XzuF1EzCzcE/UChuQYBbIVI/AAAAAAAABbk/bfnuApyo4q4/s320/marbled+pendants+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
But you want to do it as fast as you can because once it starts to dry you won't be able to run your toothpick through it to get the marbling effect. It basically becomes this dry nail polish film on top of the water which is basically useless. Which happened to me a LOT. But don't give up! I could only make 2 the first night I tried and when I tried again the next day I cranked out the next 4 pretty quickly.<br />
<br />
Oh, and to dip the pendants, I just used a little bit of clay, stuck it to the back and dipped. You do want to dip at an angle to avoid air bubbles then I just gently dabbed the water droplets with a paper towel so it could dry. <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
I think I will have to play around with this technique more...once you get the hang of it it's really fun to keep making them. They could make really unique little charms for favors or gifts too. </div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
Hi there! I'm Laura from <a href="http://bluegiraffecrafts.blogspot.com/">Blue Giraffe Crafts</a>. I'm the lucky winner of the ad competition and Michelle's kindly letting me do a guest post to tell you all about my blog.<br />
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u3mxUAL7ekc/UClMp-0ZOfI/AAAAAAAAAaQ/gWwI8B8zU0w/%0As1600/PICT0416.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="left: 1em; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="147" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-u3mxUAL7ekc/UClMp-0ZOfI/AAAAAAAAAaQ/gWwI8B8zU0w/s200/PICT0416.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My main craft is sewing. My mum trained as a nursery nurse at a time when you had to be able to sew clothes, soft toys, burp cloths and so on to pass the course and one of my Grannies made her living sewing up leather gloves and the other sews as a hobby. Basically there was no way I was growing up without learning how to use a sewing machine or how to embroider and cross stitch!<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Last year after a lot of training, a degree, locating a job and a moving into my first house, my Gran gave me the sewing machine I learnt to sew on as a moving in present. So I started to delve back into the crafts I'd loved as a kid and a teenager but forgotten about while at uni! This year I went one step further and started documenting my experiments and trying to share a few projects in a blog.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On my blog you will come across projects, reviews and examples of:</div>
<ul><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qUQib4o55ds/UClMpMWkCmI/AAAAAAAAAaI/cJG1b8pcQb4/%0As1600/PICT0385.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a>
<li>Sewing - I've become a bit of a bag addict, from the retro clutch I made for my vintage obsessed friend to my first crochet project, a patriotic flower purse (which has turned into a camera case). Currently my sewing is bag related however I'm challenging myself to make clothes again so will be updating blogland on how that goes...</li>
<li>Cooking - ok, small confession, right after sewing comes baking. I love food and cooking for people. I share my favourite things to cook and recipes I've come up with. My favourite this year - my Mum's birthday cake! I got to combine baking and crafting with my fondant icing piggies.</li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rOvV-V0mGYc/UClMncuruJI/AAAAAAAAAZ0/YFmaCDlPbuM/%0As1600/IMAG0240.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="175" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rOvV-V0mGYc/UClMncuruJI/AAAAAAAAAZ0/YFmaCDlPbuM/s200/IMAG0240.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li>Cross stitch - I'm loving the cross stitch revival that's going on Britain right now, headed by people like Mr X Stitch and magazines like Crossstitcher...and I'm stitching like mad and even dipping in to designing.</li>
</ul>
<div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xPhPkFTUv7g/UClMqn5W8OI/AAAAAAAAAac/jf1WCICfDMo/%0As1600/PICT0441.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fw5xVzL2mwQ/UClMoQUFYKI/AAAAAAAAAaA/NCh-V7AtHfY/%0As1600/PICT0348.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Fw5xVzL2mwQ/UClMoQUFYKI/AAAAAAAAAaA/NCh-V7AtHfY/s200/PICT0348.JPG" width="190" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li>My attempts at projects from Pininterest - Pininterest is bad for me, I lose ridiculous amounts of time pinning things I want to buy and collating a stupidly huge board of craft things I want to do. So occasionally I get round to doing one of those projects and tell you how I get on...from origami butterflies to fabric cross stitch rolls, I'm attempting it and telling you how to do it better.</li>
</ul>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xPhPkFTUv7g/UClMqn5W8OI/AAAAAAAAAac/jf1WCICfDMo/s1600/PICT0441.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="color: black;"><br /></span></a>

<ul></ul>
<div>
</div>
<ul>
<li>Ted the Cat - Ted is my foster cat. My boyfriend's sister got a dog and her cat Ted does not like him so Ted now visits us at weekends to get respite. Yes he has a weekend pad, he is the poshest cat in the world. And weekend auntie has never had a pet before and therefore thinks Ted is the best thing on 4 legs! He has a tendency to pop up in my posts as he likes crafting as well, particularly when there is wool to chase.<span style="text-align: center;"> </span></li>
</ul>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xPhPkFTUv7g/UClMqn5W8OI/AAAAAAAAAac/jf1WCICfDMo/s1600/PICT0441.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="161" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xPhPkFTUv7g/UClMqn5W8OI/AAAAAAAAAac/jf1WCICfDMo/s200/PICT0441.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Or how much I like buntings? Well I do, like them...a lot. There's about a million different thing you can do with shrinky dinks and buntings just make me happy. They're always so cheery. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nMNS37Ws5k0/UChsGWO69tI/AAAAAAAABbA/ywjanx3k_ME/s320/bunting+necklace+4.jpg" width="320" /> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So I'm combining the two...into one awesome shrinky dink bunting necklace! Sorry for the lack of 'before' photos it seems a bit weird to take photos of something that's clear... But basically, cut out some triangles, punch holes, and bake as instructed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tT0qBEfm3NI/UChsDpPpsSI/AAAAAAAABao/lsyltqXK7dY/s1600/bunting+necklace+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tT0qBEfm3NI/UChsDpPpsSI/AAAAAAAABao/lsyltqXK7dY/s320/bunting+necklace+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Once they're cool, you can paint them with some fingernail polish and add your jump rings. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw6QtjifjXlZq5pFjHZNzCdiMD1sCUonGEdIua-2_wMoXmCtHCC6j3OmqcT-DRI9dPUqi5mf0v7KjFCgpdze8HwWAZ36OM0Gi8WDvWk2XqRwUIjNDOoT6JFakiHXRtOFozuiIq_8HcDz2s/s1600/bunting+necklace+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjw6QtjifjXlZq5pFjHZNzCdiMD1sCUonGEdIua-2_wMoXmCtHCC6j3OmqcT-DRI9dPUqi5mf0v7KjFCgpdze8HwWAZ36OM0Gi8WDvWk2XqRwUIjNDOoT6JFakiHXRtOFozuiIq_8HcDz2s/s320/bunting+necklace+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
You could even rearrange the triangles if you feel like something more tribal... <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And by forever...I mean more like 6 months... It doesn't get much simpler than this headband, the pattern was the perfect size for my head and the tutorial has clear photos for every step. Honestly, the hardest part was picking the fabric! Well that and maybe trying to iron it without burning myself. <br />
<br />
It can be a bit tricky trying to attach the elastic piece to the front piece but I would recommend securing the elastic closer to your seam allowance rather than close to the edge. That way the ends will lay flat and be easier to catch when topstitching rather than wanting to scrunch up on you. <br />
<br />
If you have a jelly roll, this is the perfect project. the band will be a bit skinnier in the front but you could potentially make lots of little gifts or party favors for people! <br />

I've only heard about it recently but it's a really easy way to put your ad up on a blog or even swap ads. It generates all the HTML for your shop and ads all you have to do it cut and paste. Plus it automatically rotates your ads and takes them down after 30 days so you don't have to worry. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-539njgFRjq4/UCSRI8Mmo-I/AAAAAAAABZA/qNxu0mDnQJw/s1600/color+palette+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-539njgFRjq4/UCSRI8Mmo-I/AAAAAAAABZA/qNxu0mDnQJw/s320/color+palette+copy.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As I mentioned before, I will be doing a 1/2 off sale on ad spaces for the month of August! You can read more about my ads <a href="http://www.thegildedhare.com/2012/06/become-sponsor-for-gilded-hare.html">here</a>. So if you are interested, just use the code HALF OFF when purchasing your ad space and start advertising for as low as $2.50!! <br />
<br />
I am also open to swapping ad spaces! If you'd like to swap ad spaces use the code SWAP when purchasing (only medium size ads). Then just shoot me an email (michelle@thegildedhare.com) with some info on how to set up my ad on your blog. <br />
<br />
**UPDATE** For those that were having problems, I have fixed the promo code issues! Also, I just realized that PassionFruit only works in $1 increments so I have lowered the price of the medium ads to $4. So now you can advertise for as low as $2!!<br />

The first time I saw this <a href="http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2011/05/wallet-to-tote-on-the-go-tutorial/">pattern</a> I <i>knew</i> I had to make one...but then I got intimidated...I mean zipper on a curve? With a hidden bag inside? It seemed a little too complicated at the time so I put it off. But after my last project with a curved zipper I thought maybe it won't be too bad...hah! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
So your first impression of this awesome little bag, is that it's a clutch right? There's a long zip all the way around and then a little inset zipper on the front. But it's really a transformer (cue cheesy transformer's sound effect). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CuxD_Szb03Q/UB8zVhwJBFI/AAAAAAAABVU/WpVmEEJFar8/s1600/grocery+bag+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CuxD_Szb03Q/UB8zVhwJBFI/AAAAAAAABVU/WpVmEEJFar8/s320/grocery+bag+3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Shazaam! Bet you didn't expect a whole bag to come out of there did you?? <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_yb19fgea5o/UB8zWpr1jfI/AAAAAAAABVc/wH7MN3WC32Y/s1600/grocery+bag+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_yb19fgea5o/UB8zWpr1jfI/AAAAAAAABVc/wH7MN3WC32Y/s320/grocery+bag+4.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I had to modify the posted tutorial a bit because the longest zipper I had at the time was only 14 inches. So instead of the rounded pattern posted, I made a simple rectangular, or square shape. Honestly, the bag construction is super simple and the easiest part. I did add a couple inches of interfacing along the top edge of the outer fabric of the bag just for some added strength around the handles. But I didn't use any interfacing for handles they seem okay. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The inset zipper is pretty simple, you can find my version <a href="http://www.thegildedhare.com/2012/06/how-to-sew-pocket-zipper.html">here</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The most complicated part, and the part that really got me frustrated was the long zipper. For whatever reason, my sewing machine <i>really</i> did not like this zipper (probably because I was getting too confident in my zipper sewing technique). Threads kept catching and the tension was getting thrown off and all sorts of weird stuff was happening. But I toughed it out and I ended up with a pretty nifty little bag/clutch. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What I would recommend when you're working on this bag is first definitely make sure you have a zipper that's long enough. This is not a place where you can get always with being a little off, you need to have an extra couple inches of zipper. Second, definitely clip the corners/curves before you sew. I usually don't do this until I'm done, but when I got to the corners on this piece it was really difficult to sew without clipping. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I'm going to try something a bit different this week...there've been several patterns/tutorials that I've been eyeballing but I still want to share with all of you, so I'm just going to post photos of my finished product and a brief review of the tutorial. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I'll start off with this little<a href="http://www.craftpassion.com/2012/07/zipper-card-pouch.html/2"> Zippered Card Pouch</a> from Craft Passion. I'd been staying away from curved zippers because I felt my grasp of regular zippers wasn't quite good enough to handle the curve, but I suppose I've been getting bored with sewing zippers in a straight line and I wanted something to sort of challenge me. And yes I did regret saying that in another curved zipper project I will post later this week. But this little guy was actually much easier than I thought. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUaailYTj1YA2XWSMc4kLorRHrfW515DcHfwug-9FLJazJy_MBNPwcoKJltvzp5FfIVDjL7KEldcNCwzRLFJSVKXXkWMCkBJdhHEzezcdK_uf5_4i7f8Ici8Fz3hOSUlvP7DO-ppch1qdu/s1600/card+wallet+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUaailYTj1YA2XWSMc4kLorRHrfW515DcHfwug-9FLJazJy_MBNPwcoKJltvzp5FfIVDjL7KEldcNCwzRLFJSVKXXkWMCkBJdhHEzezcdK_uf5_4i7f8Ici8Fz3hOSUlvP7DO-ppch1qdu/s200/card+wallet+2.jpg" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9QkquPkYu2S49aK7tutwfe1I7yXTVTBJgotCUMS5W8izNHYMlUx4Z-c1FX40ppx162sEcipziN46HhOiBXIS4-iayjlq0CUDywef27Co6qF5nDUgGq-gWqUSZyyDz3anQLM5i0x_H2E6D/s1600/card+wallet+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="133" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9QkquPkYu2S49aK7tutwfe1I7yXTVTBJgotCUMS5W8izNHYMlUx4Z-c1FX40ppx162sEcipziN46HhOiBXIS4-iayjlq0CUDywef27Co6qF5nDUgGq-gWqUSZyyDz3anQLM5i0x_H2E6D/s200/card+wallet+1.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
I wouldn't recommend skipping any steps when sewing the zipper...the tutorial has an advanced sewer's shortcut which is basically sewing the lining, main fabric, and zipper together all at the same time, which is what I usually do. But because of the curve, I would recommend doing the lining first then the main fabric like the tutorial explains. I mean it's a really small zipper anyway so it's not much extra work, and it's way less work than having to rip out your stitches later if something goes wrong...and you know it will as soon as you get at all confident about zippers... <br />
<br />
The tutorial calls for ribbon for the inner card divider but I didn't have any so I just used some of the twill fabric I used for the outside. It turned out okay, but I wouldn't recommend anything heavier than regular cotton because the twill became really bulky on mine. <br />
<br />
I did use some lightweight interfacing which I think may or may not have been necessary, I mean if you're using plain cotton on the outside definitely use interfacing, but you're using something like twill (like I did) or something heavier like canvas (like the tutorial used) you don't need it. <br />
<br />
This was also the first time I ever made a little side gusset, which was kind of cool. I never would've thought of sewing on the fold to make it fold inward, something to file away for later use... <br />
<br />
Also, when I was sewing the interior and adding the bias tape, I made the corner opposite the zipper have a slight rounded edge which I think was a mistake. Because of the bulk from the bias tape it made the corner look really weird, not quite square-ish? I need to try it again with a sharper corner on the inside and see if makes a difference. <br />
<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span">So if you're pretty comfortable with zippers, or even if you're not, you should check out this </span><a href="http://www.craftpassion.com/2012/07/zipper-card-pouch.html/2">tutorial</a><span class="Apple-style-span">!! The instructions and photos are really clear and make the whole process pretty simple. Well actually the photos are really confusing at first, but once you get started it'll make sense. And it's a good way to use up larger pieces of scrap fabric! </span><br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span">Good luck and happy crafting!!</span><br />

<br />
so places i would like to visit or move...well to be fair i've already visited a lot of places that i wanted to; paris, italy, japan, and london to name a few. but some places i still want to go...the 2 places that i've always wanted to go since i was a kid are egypt and australia. i've always wanted to go diving in australia and see the pyramids of egypt!! i was always interested in eyptian culture as a kid and i still love hieroglyphics! and diving, well even though i'm really a horrible swimmer i love being in the water. there's something so relaxing about it and the marine biota can be so amazing!! <br />

i always thought it was sad when the people who lived in a big touristy city never got around to seeing any of the attractions in their city. i mean if you live there you might as well check it out right? well, sadly, i've become one of those people. i've lived in honolulu for more than a year now and i haven't really gone to see anything. i mean i go to the beach and snorkel and all that, but i haven't really visited any of the museums around here. so my boyfriend and i decided to make a list of some of the things we want to see/do and set up a sort of drawing system for what we do each weekend. we're both desperately indecisive so we needed a system to make decisions for us lol! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
i used a template and made some printable envelopes with a description of the activity on the front. if you want it to be a surprise you can always leave it blank in the front, but since some of my activities are day specific i decided to put them on the front. usually we don't carry cash but since we both get tips at our jobs (yeah he gets tips working at a hardware store weird right??) we'd saved up some money in cash. so i allocated the monies to each envelope for bus fare, snacks, admission, etc. plus, if you have a budget this is a good way to keep you from overspending. you can just make the envelopes if you have extra cash and only spend what you give yourself! of course, if you actually put money in the envelopes make sure you don't lose them!! that's something i'll probably end up doing...i'm notorious at organizing/putting things away and then promptly forgetting where i put them lol. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
right now we have 8 envelopes set up and we (and by 'we' i mean 'i') still have more to make! i think we will make a more another version for more expensive activities like doing a shark dive!! i've always wanted to do one of those...speaking of sharks, i love shark week! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
the original template i used can be found <a href="http://familycrafts.about.com/od/creativepaper/ss/Blank_Envelope_Template.htm">here</a> and you can find my template with the stripes <a href="https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B8P2W59dkEeVN3dmODYtNko1Z00">here</a> (they are both designed to make 2 envelopes per 1 sheet of computer paper). sorry for the low resolution, i didn't realize the original was so low until i had already done the stripes. and then i was basically committed lol. or you could always find a pattern you like print it, and print the template on the back. or just print on to card stock or something.<br />
<br />

<br />
supplies:<br />
-2 fish hook earrings<br />
-2 jump rings <br />
-polymer clay<br />
-(2) 1 inch pieces of wire<br />
-pliers <br />
-paint (optional) <br />
<br />
it's really pretty simple, just shape the clay into the general shape of the antler. then gradually start to the taper everything down so it doesn't look so chunky (unless you want it to look that way). bake according to the clay you're using. using your pliers, make a small loop on one end of each piece of wire.
insert the straight end of the wire into the end of the antler after you
finish sculpting it. attach the antlers to the fish hooks using the jump rings. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a0tGGDSjCLk/UBTHI_ohJoI/AAAAAAAAACI/ucQBiHGTKmw/s1600/diy+stag+earrings+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-a0tGGDSjCLk/UBTHI_ohJoI/AAAAAAAAACI/ucQBiHGTKmw/s320/diy+stag+earrings+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
i used some gloss white nail polish as a finish on mine but you could make them any color...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T6TU_yMOAIo/UBhxIRFBR4I/AAAAAAAAACg/XutvzFrav1g/s1600/stag+earrings.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T6TU_yMOAIo/UBhxIRFBR4I/AAAAAAAAACg/XutvzFrav1g/s320/stag+earrings.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
and that's it..seriously...you just made a knock off of $200 earrings for probably less than $5!? crazy right? i mean sure the anthro version is a lot more thin/delicate looking than mine and made out of mammoth ivory but still...i'd rather have my $5 version.<br />

<br />
these are really simple to make and i think make my items look really custom! first make your design in whatever program you're comfortable with. print off a tester to make sure it's going to fit whatever item you're trying to wrap. then cut a piece of kraft paper to size, use double sided tape to secure it to a regular piece of computer paper and print like normal. then use a decorative punch all along the edges of the kraft paper and wrap! <br />
<br />
what d'you guys think? yay or nay? before i used the kraft paper and wrapped baker's twine around and tied off with a bunny tag. i like how with these the items are labelled so it's easy to tell exactly what it is when i'm looking through my inventory. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
today's challenge is supposed to be outlining my whole day...well i wanna start by saying that i'm really a pretty boring person...i spend a lot of time laying around thinking about things that i could and should be doing lol. <br />
<br />
so first up, since my new job starts on wednesday and i have to get up at 6!! i've slowly been trying to condition myself to get up earlier. i've been getting up before 7 for the past week but i haven't really been going to sleep earlier so i've really only succeeded in making myself sleep deprived. and since i'm really tired my first few hours of consciousness consist of me laying in bed, half awake trying to surf pinterest on my phone with my dry blurry morning eyes. i'm practically blind without my contacts and it's too early to wear glasses so of course my phone is inches from my face... <br />
<br />
and that continues until almost 9, yeah i wasted 2 hours on my phone... but i had a strangely productive morning. first i cleaned up my rabbits' litter boxes 'cause they were gettin' nasty!! for some reason, grumbles has been consuming a LOT of water lately which means his litter box ideally needs to be changed almost every other day...which means i <i>might</i> do it twice a week. yeah i make him live in his own filth...<br />
<br />
then i actually made 2 bags, that i found on pinterest lol. the first is from a <a href="http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/2011/05/wallet-to-tote-on-the-go-tutorial/#.UBeCro7lMVc">tote-to-go</a> from ikat bag and the second if a <a href="http://www.craftpassion.com/2012/07/zipper-card-pouch.html/2">card wallet</a> from sew passion. i will be posting photos and my thoughts about these 2 tutorials later this week. <br />
<br />
then i made a custom order for my Etsy shop. (now that i'm writing it down it actually kinda sounds like i did a lot today...) so i took photos of the order so i could post it, i also took photos of my new packaging design for some items in my shop. then photoshoped them and posted them on etsy. <br />
<br />
after that my day gets sorta lazy...i cleaned up my makeshift craft area. i always just toss the threads down when i sew so i'm left with a big mess in the end! <br />
<br />
then i got back on my laptop looked up houses back home that i wished i could buy...it still blows my mind that as much as i pay for rent here, i could be paying mortgage on a house back home!! of course now it's blazing hot and the breeze has basically died so it's just hot air sitting in my apartment. so i took a 15 minute nap. <br />
<br />
then i made lunch for me and my boyfriend (eggs, toast, and oatmeal raisin cookies), went grocery shopping, printed off a new calendar for the year..don't judge i'm just now gettin' around to it!! i found a really cute one from <a href="http://www.thetomkatstudio.com/2012-printable-calendar-by-the-tomkat-studio/">tomkat studio</a>, it's clean and simple with a pop of color. <br />
<br />
and now i'm writing this post whilst i make broccoli and corn for dinner tonight (bf is making pork steak if he ever gets off work). <br />
<br />
<br />
and that was my monday! hmmm maybe i should write down what i do every day, seeing it all written up makes me feel like i did so much hah!Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06037197798241434536noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8279313680706721337.post-77901411052099505072012-07-29T15:37:00.002-10:002012-08-01T09:01:32.330-10:00DIY Carved Filigree Earrings<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
supplies:<br />
-8 jump rings<br />
-2 fish hook earrings<br />
-shrinky dink <br />
-sharpie or colored pencils<br />
-nail polish or paint <br />
<br />
if you've never worked with shrinky dink before you can also read my other project <a href="http://www.thegildedhare.com/2012/07/tutorial-shrinky-dink-swallow-pendant.html">here</a>. <br />
<br />
start by sketching out the filigree design you want. you can use colored pencils or sharpie to fill in your design. i wanted a sort of scribbled look so i didn't completely fill it in. then make 4 small teardrop shapes and 2 large tear drop shapes. (i ended up rubbing off the sharpie scribbles on these parts and i made the large teardrops smooth on top like the smaller ones.) cut out your designs and punch your holes. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KSZwPYOEur8/UBTDeMJx9FI/AAAAAAAAABg/HPYeiGGujZw/s1600/diy+filigree+earrings+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-KSZwPYOEur8/UBTDeMJx9FI/AAAAAAAAABg/HPYeiGGujZw/s320/diy+filigree+earrings+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
next, bake your shrinky dink as per instructions. you can use paint or fingernail polish to paint the teardrop shapes. and it's read to assemble. i used 4 jump rings per earring, no the 7 pictured. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s2yNiZ-eJc0/UBTDfOdV9fI/AAAAAAAAABo/xDT8tgcWD6E/s1600/diy+filigree+earring+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s2yNiZ-eJc0/UBTDfOdV9fI/AAAAAAAAABo/xDT8tgcWD6E/s320/diy+filigree+earring+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
and that's it! pretty simple right? and altogether i think they cost less than $5, versus $68! of course if you're buying all these supplies new it will cost more but once you break it down based on what you use they're really cheap. i wish i had made the teardrops a bit bigger and fatter but i really like the way they turned out!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
unfortunately, whenever i look for pallets they always look like they're in really bad shape. and i tried taking one apart once and it was really rather unsuccessful...in fact i have the sad remains still on my lanai to remind me of what a horrible failure it was lol. i also read some articles about how some pallets are chemically treated and it can be really difficult to tell which ones those are. and since i have 2 bunnies who have to nibble on everything i decided that maybe using pallets wasn't the best option for home decor. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
but i still wanted some storage crates. so i went and bought some pine lumber and made this bad boy:</div>

<br />
first, apparently city mill really only sells pine and mahogany. and i wasn't gonna shell out for mahogany when i was going to make it look old anyway so i was stuck with pine. which is probably for the best because it still ended up being about $15 just for the lumber! already way more than i wanted to spend:/ <br />
<br />
i bought (1) 1"x10"x48" and (1) 1"x12"x48" here's how i had mine cut: (keep in mind that lumber is actually smaller than what it's marked so instead of 1" it's actually more like 3/4")<br />
<br />
the 1" x 10" will be the sides-first, i had them cut it into (2) 23.5" x 10" pieces. then i had them split both those pieces in half (hotdog style). so you should end up with 4 pieces that are 23.5" x 5" (technically a little less than 5"). originally i had them cut the pieces to 24" because i forgot that lumber is actually smaller than marked, so when i got home and double checked i had to take an extra 1/2" off all 4 pieces. super annoying when you're working with a leatherman tool... <br />
<br />
the 1" x 12" will be the front/back and bottom. i had them cut (2) 12" x 12" and (1) 22" x 12" pieces. you can cut holes to make handles in the front/back like i did or you can buy handles from the hardware section.<br />
<br />
i stained and sealed all the pieces first then put it together. i started by attaching the front and back to the bottom piece then added in the sides. the construction is really pretty simple. <br />
<br />
and i had to spend $12 on casters so the project was already almost $30! which again, was way more than i originally planned on spending. but i still liked the way it turned out. city mill also has this little cart in the lumber section of scrap wood for 50 cents a piece. when i was there they had a lot of chemically treated 2x4 pieces so you might be able to make a crate for much cheaper.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
as for the finish, i ended up using minwax driftwood stain. i like the way it turned out but i wish it had more of gray tone. <br />
<br />
i had originally planned on using the vinegar/steel wool technique that is supposed to oxidize the wood and give it a really aged appearance. well i put one piece of superfine steel wool into apple cider vinegar for one day and tested it out. when i took the wool out it looked the same but i could definitely see little pieces of it floating in the vinegar and it smelled pretty rusty. the first few pieces i tried had more of a brown finish rather than the gray i was looking for. i waited a couple days and it was slowly starting to turn a light gray color but it was still really inconsistent. <br />
<br />
then i stumbled across a post where the writer would leave the solution sitting for weeks! well i didn't really feel like waiting around for weeks with a pile of wood in my kitchen so i just bought some stain instead. i still have the solution though so maybe next month i'll make something else that i can try it out on...<br />
